When patients are in pain from an injury, the first thing they want to know is: “how long will the pain last?” and “will it ever get better?”
I always tell them that recovery time depends on how severe the injury is and how long they’ve had it for.
As a general rule of thumb, injuries can take the same amount of time to heal (undevelop) as they did to develop. So if you succumbed to an injury 3-4 days ago, then it could take 3-4 days to fully recover if you get the right treatment. But if you’ve had an injury that has been lingering around for years, or even decades, then we have to shift gears to control and maintain the issue. In fact, those are our two goals: first, we need to control it, then, we need to maintain it.
To achieve our first goal of controlling the issue, we would do about 4 – 8 treatments (with 1 treatment/week) depending on your overall health, diet and lifestyle.
Then, we would maintain the issue by spacing treatments out to just once a month. During that monthly checkup, we would look at the injury and make sure it hasn’t developed any additional problems. We would also use preventative measures to keep it from getting worse, which is similar to using oil lube and filters to maintain your car.
Your speed of recovery also depends on how healthy you are as an individual. A run-down system might take longer to recover than a finely-tuned system. If you’re healthy, active and youthful, your odds of recovery are better than somebody who is an inactive, elderly person. The vital elements to a speedy recovery are: sleep, diet, and a positive attitude.
Without adequate sleep, your body doesn’t have enough time to regenerate. On average, most people require about 8 hours of sleep. Combine 8 hours of sleep with the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals – and watch your body achieve miracles!
